Background

UNDP is the global development network of the United Nations, active in over 170 countries. We support developing nations in building sustainable capacities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our Office of Procurement (OP) is part of the Bureau of Management Services (BMS), focusing on developing procurement policies and providing advisory services. The Central Procurement Team (CPT) in New York oversees procurement support for UNDP business units, ensuring compliance and efficiency in procurement transactions over $5,000.

Internship Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Procurement Specialist and the Chief of the CPT, the intern will undertake various tasks, including:

  • Daily Support: Provide procurement assistance to team members.
  • Meeting Attendance: Participate in CPT meetings and document key points.
  • Logistics Coordination: Organize candidate interviews and logistics for procuring individual contractors.
  • Report Preparation: Assist CPT buyers in drafting evaluation reports and technical/financial evaluation matrices.
  • Contract Drafting: Help draft contracts for new vendors and amendments to existing contracts.
  • Process Support: Aid in organizing procurement processes, including RFQs, ITBs, RFPs, and Direct Contracting.
  • Database Management: Maintain the contract database and update client feedback surveys.
  • SOP Development: Support the creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for contract management.
  • Market Research: Conduct market research in preparation for tender launches and value assessments.

Competencies Required

  • Innovation: Ability to generate and implement new ideas.
  • Delivery: Strong prioritization skills and adherence to organizational structure.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent research abilities and analytical aptitude.
  • Communication Skills: Strong writing and communication skills, especially in team settings.
  • Organizational Skills: Effective time management and interpersonal skills.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate program or in their final undergraduate year in fields such as development, business, international relations, or law. Recent graduates are also eligible if they start the internship within one year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in procurement, finance, or business administration is beneficial but not mandatory. Familiarity with office software (e.g., MS Word, Excel) is a plus.

Language Proficiency:

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Proficiency in other UN languages is an advantage.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    1. Be enrolled in a graduate program.
    2. Be in the final year of an undergraduate program.
    3. Have graduated with a university degree and start the internship within one year of graduation.

Additional Information

  • Internship Duration: 6 months, full-time
  • Stipend: Interns may receive a stipend to assist with daily expenses; arrangements for travel, visas, and accommodation are the intern's responsibility.
  • Documentation Required: Upon selection, interns must provide a certificate of good health, proof of medical insurance, proof of enrollment/graduation, a copy of their passport, and any required work permits.

Career Path: While internships are designed to complement academic studies rather than lead directly to employment with UNDP, many interns have transitioned to further roles within the UN system after completing their studies.
