Objective of the Role:
Retention Support Teachers have a solid foundation in early childhood development
concepts, theories, and practices. They also rely heavily on retention education pedagogy.
They are responsible for identifying students’ academic strengths and weaknesses at an
early age. These insights help them to plan general and targeted curriculum to prepare
students for success in certain levels and beyond.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide effective support and facilitation to Syrian refugee children, at community-based
schools locations in or near Informal Tented Settlements and/or other sheltering premises
for specific hours per week (agreed with the education officer based on the subject and the
working hours) either in the afternoon or morning depending on whether children are
enrolled in the first or second shift.
Implement child-centered teaching strategies and methodologies to support children in
Arabic, Math and Second Language (English).
Attend standardized Facilitator Teacher Training and any other professional development,
and agree to technical support visits from SAWA Officers.
Maintain a safe and effective teaching/learning environment in the learning space, and
comply with all SAWA’s Child Protection policies and guidelines.
Terms of Reference
Enhance parental partnership though proper communication channels with
parents/refugees.
Implement SAWA’s Retention Support curriculum and enrich content where appropriate,
including the production and dissemination of teaching hand outs and activities sheets.
Assess children’s learning achievement, using properly designed assessment tools, both at
the beginning of the school year, in the middle of the year, and at the end of the school
year, with periodic assessments during the year
Competencies and Skills:
Comfortable implementing retention centers procedures and managing rooms of levels with
diverse students and different learning abilities.
Establishing rules and holding each student accountable; shows them how rooms of levels
functions best when everyone works together.
Knowledgeable about progress indicators that keep students on track.
Expert in reading and writing, vocabulary and mathematics curriculum, and other subjects
for retention support centers students.
Being confident talking with students! Teachers should be able and willing to get to know
their students’ differing personalities.
Ready to make learning fun! Teachers provide the educational foundation that students will
rely on for many years. Making class time special, creative, and enjoyable will benefit
students for the long run.
