ASSABIL is a non-sectarian NGO engaged in promoting cultural participation and knowledge sharing through public libraries and public spaces. We promote reading, unlock imagination and nurture critical thinking, thereby contributing to building well-informed communities.
We develop capacities, network, and share expertise with public libraries, cultural actors, and educational institutions all over Lebanon to ensure that inclusive programming strategies are applied, and state of the art tools and equitable access to knowledge are in place to reach out to those most in need and encourage their active participation in civic life.
Position: Story-based language teachers (2 Arabic teachers, 1 English teacher, 1 French teacher)
Contract type: Short term
Contract duration: 4 months between February 2024 and May 2024
Project title: “Libraries, leaders and cultural planners of community-based action”
Project Description: The library, integrated into education models, plays a vital role in disseminating knowledge, education, and literacy within the community. It is actively involved in structuring educational manuals and courses that facilitate language learning through library resources.
General Purpose of the Position: Teachers will conduct language sessions (two days per week, two hours per day) in one assigned language (Arabic, English, or French) to enhance language skills for third-grade students using the Assabil story-based language-teaching toolkit. Teachers will undergo training on toolkit usage before the program starts. Language sessions will be held at Beirut Municipal Public Libraries in Bachoura and Monnot. Teachers will closely collaborate with the Project Coordinator (PC) leading the project.
Main Responsibilities of the Position
- Attend training on the Assabil story-based language-teaching toolkit before the program begins.
- Conduct language-teaching sessions for third-grade students from February to May 2024, two days per week, two hours per day.
- Utilize a story-based language teaching method using the Assabil toolkit, presenting language lessons in a narrative format to enhance vocabulary, grammar, and phrase structure.
- Ensure an engaging and interactive teaching method, focusing on making language learning enjoyable.
- Incorporate multimedia sources for audio-visual content with accompanying transcripts when needed.
- Act out stories or engage in role-playing scenarios with learners.
- Identify and address students' weaknesses, challenging and inspiring them to overcome language barriers.
- Monitor and report on student progress regularly.
- Communicate with parents and the ASSABIL program management team daily regarding student progress or any teaching session issues.
- Ensure all data and information provided to the project manager are correct and revised.
Knowledge, Skills and Personal Attributes
- A degree in education, literature, or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in the assigned language (Arabic, French, or English), with a deep understanding of grammar, literature, and culture.
- Previous teaching experience with elementary students.
- Previous experience as storyteller is preferred.
- Strong oral communication, public speaking and class animation skills.
- Punctuality in work delivery and ability to meet deadlines.
